I have spent 17+ years inside marketing teams rather than adjacent to them. Most of that was operator work: owning the number, not presenting a deck about it. When I ran marketing for a SaaS hospitality company, I learned that the constraint is almost never the channel. It is the system feeding it.

FAQs are one of the most citable formats in AI search because they do what assistants want: pose a real question and answer it in a self-contained block. To optimise them, use the questions buyers actually ask, answer each directly, keep answers accurate and specific, and add FAQ schema so the structure is explicit. The format helps only if the answers are genuinely useful.
You update old content for AI search by making your best existing pages extractable, current, and clearly attributed, not by publishing new ones. Find pages that already cover buyer questions, restructure each answer to stand alone, correct anything dated, and add the specifics only you can provide. A focused refresh of pages assistants already reach usually beats adding more.
Share of voice in AI search is the share of relevant assistant answers that name your brand, versus competitors. You calculate it by running a fixed set of buyer questions and counting how often each brand appears. It is a useful comparative signal, but it depends on the question set, treats a passing mention like a recommendation, and shifts. Use it as one tracked indicator, not a verdict.
