I have spent 17+ years inside marketing teams rather than adjacent to them. Most of that was operator work: owning the number, not presenting a deck about it. When I ran marketing for a SaaS hospitality company, I learned that the constraint is almost never the channel. It is the system feeding it.
That is what I do now. I diagnose why a company is losing visibility as search moves to AI answers, and I redesign the marketing system underneath so the output reaches revenue. Backlinks still matter for AI search, but their role shifts. They are less a ranking score and more one signal of corroboration: evidence that credible sources take you seriously. What matters as much now is being mentioned and described consistently across the web, with or without a link. So keep earning genuine links, but treat them as part of a wider corroboration effort, not the whole game.
You cannot read the ROI of AI search from a traffic chart, because much of its value is influence that never shows as a click. Measure it on three levels: presence (are you cited for buyers' questions), referral (traffic and conversions from assistants), and influence (buyers who arrive already aware). Tie those to pipeline, and accept that some of the return is directional, not a clean number.
AI assistants cite Reddit and forums because they read as genuine, independent human experience, the opposite of marketing copy. Communities discuss products candidly, answer real questions, and carry the corroboration models trust. You cannot fake your way in, but you can earn presence honestly: be useful where your buyers already talk, and give those communities real reasons to mention you.
